“From Chimneys to Beacons: How a Small Buffalo Company Became a Leader in Lighthouse Preservation”

As caretakers of North Carolina’s oldest standing lighthouse, the Old Baldy Foundation understands the ongoing demands of preserving maritime heritage. While we manage the daily upkeep of Old Baldy, major restorations—like stucco work, copper roofing, or iron casting—require specialized skills and tools. That’s where professionals like Tyler Finkle and his team come in.

About the Speaker
Tyler Finkle is the Division Manager of Historic Preservation at ICC Commonwealth, a Buffalo, NY-based firm internationally recognized for its expertise in restoring historic structures—especially lighthouses. Under Tyler’s leadership, ICC has completed preservation work on more than 80 lighthouses across the U.S. and abroad, including sites as remote as the Falkland Islands.

Originally from Youngstown, NY, a small village at the mouth of the Lower Niagara River, Tyler grew up in a sailing family and developed a lifelong passion for maritime history. After graduating from The Gunnery School in Washington, CT, and Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA, he began his preservation career restoring Gilded Age mansions in Newport, RI. He joined ICC Commonwealth (formerly International Chimney Corporation) in 2013 and apprenticed for seven years under renowned preservationist Joe Jakubik, who was known for relocating and restoring historic masonry lighthouses across the country.

In 2019, Tyler took the helm of ICC’s preservation division and has since led teams working on some of the nation’s most iconic lighthouse restorations, including:

  • Cape Flattery, WA

  • Gay Head, Martha’s Vineyard, MA

  • Currituck Beach, Corolla, NC

  • Pigeon Point, CA

  • Cape Henry, VA

  • Tybee Island, GA

  • Matinicus Rock, ME

  • Port Austin Reef, MI

  • Plum Island, NY

  • Cape Pembroke, Falkland Islands

  • Roosevelt Island Lighthouse, NYC
