For this month’s Book of the Month selection, we turn to a reviewer whose appreciation for Jimmy Buffett extends well beyond his books and music. Jana Cruse has been a dedicated Parrothead for decades, embracing the music, stories, and carefree spirit that made Buffett a cultural icon. During her years living in Charleston, South Carolina, she occasionally spotted Buffett around town, making her connection to his world feel all the more personal. As a lifelong bird lover, Jana also shares her home with parrots of her own—a fitting companion to her Parrothead identity.
Over the years, her admiration for Buffett has grown into a collection of vintage Margaritaville shirts. Rather than keeping them tucked away, she is currently transforming the collection into a quilt, preserving a lifetime of Buffett-inspired adventures in a new form.
With her deep connection to Buffett’s world of adventure, escape, and coastal living, Jana was the perfect person to revisit A Salty Piece of Land. In this review, she explores the novel’s colorful characters, tropical settings, and free-spirited sense of wanderlust that have made Buffett’s writing resonate with readers who dream of life beyond the everyday.

Salty Piece of Land is a 2004 novel by Jimmy Buffett that follows Tully Mars, a restless adventurer whose assignment to restore a lighthouse on a remote Caribbean island leads to a surreal journey shaped by eccentric characters, hidden histories, and the lure of escape. The book continues the story of Tully Mars from Buffett’s earlier collection Tales from Margaritaville, but it can still be read as a standalone novel because Buffett quickly establishes Tully’s personality, his unsettled relationships, and his desire to keep moving.
Buffett builds the novel around Tully’s wandering life as a fishing guide in the Caribbean, using the lighthouse restoration as a narrative anchor for a story that moves between adventure, fantasy, and reflection. One of the novel’s most distinctive features is its blend of pop-culture references, fantasy elements, and Caribbean atmosphere, which gives the story an imaginative tone even when its structure becomes episodic.
As the plot unfolds, Tully is pulled into a series of strange encounters involving old romances, unusual companions, and larger-than-life figures, all of which reinforce Buffett’s recurring interest in people who reinvent themselves far from ordinary life. Although the novel includes treasure hunters, pirates, ghosts, and a mythical island, its deeper appeal lies in the atmosphere Buffett creates. That mix of charm and unpredictability makes the book appealing to readers who enjoy eccentric adventures and escapist fiction. Overall, Salty Piece of Land succeeds best as a relaxed, imaginative novel that reflects Buffett’s larger artistic identity: humorous, unconventional, and deeply drawn to the idea of freedom.
